Rane Committee Report- Maratha Reservation (2014)

Six Commissions over a period of 60 years classified Maratha community as Forward Community – Kaka Kalelkar Commission (1955), Deshmukh Committee (1962), Mandal Commission (1980), Khatri Commission (1997), National Commission of Backward Classes (2000), Bapat Commission (2008). Despite these conclusions, Maharashtra government constituted Rane Committee under the Chairmanship of Mr. Narayan Rane who was the State Cabinet minister and himself being from the Maratha Community. Rane Committee recommended 20% reservation exclusively for the Maratha Community. Based on Rane Committee recommendations, Maharashtra government granted 18% reservation exclusively to the Maratha Community. Honourable Bombay High Court stayed the reservation granted to the Maratha Community.
